I am just going to come right out and say it. Marcus Peters is a victim of the media. I have known this for a while, but even here Eric Berry points it out. Peters has done lots of good for the community, but sadly the "bad" things he does get more attention.
Anyway.....
Since that has been said lets get to the possible trade reasons.
1. Clark Hunt had told Reid and Veach that there was no way he wanted Peters on this roster another two years. Peters on the field antics combined with the national anthem actions (in this case seems wrong. Lots of local fans are on the side that it's too much. Notice I only said LOTS, not all.) was just too much of a drain on the fans and Clark. I personally don't like this theory because Veach and Reid have said on multiple occasions that Hunt is a pretty hands off owner. I don't think Hunt was really involved, but it can't be completely ruled out.
2. Peters was part of the defensive woes last season. I could see this one a little bit more. The defense as a whole did play better in that lone game without him last year, but this was only a sample size. His "apparent tackling issues" were somewhat frustrating. (Click here for a crazy stat on Peters last season, by mid season.) This is a little more likely, but still doesn't seem right.
3. Peters didn't want to stay in KC. This one is my personal favorite. Seth Keysor (@realMNChiefsFan) had tweeted out he heard from a reliable source that Peters asked for a trade after the titans game. Now that we are on the other side of these rumors this makes more sense. This season has been a low for Peters. He has had less action on his side of the field, Berry was out the whole year, the fans started to hate him for the anthem protest (totally unfair by the way. There will be an article on that later.), the defense was the weakness of this team at times and the other corner couldn't seem to produce most of the time (this is a misnomer, and there also will be an article later. ).
It was also pretty evident that he did not agree with Sutton's running of the defense this year, as Peters was yelling at him in several instances. Even with all the things he did in the community, people still didn't look past the anthem protest and the eventual suspension. Plus this team actually didn't improve in the playoffs at all. As he stated, he didn't have a problem with Reid. What probably happened is this: After the playoff game Peters had a little sit down with Reid. Peters at this point probably aired out his feelings of this year in Kansas City. He and Reid probably agreed that it was best for Peters to leave Kansas City. Then they traded for his replacement in Kendall Fuller, and found a rising team to take him. This is what probably happened.
Now on to the deal that was made.
(Chiefs) (Rams)
Peters + this year's 6th round for this year's 4th round and next year's 2nd round.
This in my personal opinion is not the best trade, but you can live with it. Or you have to after March 14th anyway. In my opinion I would accept 2 thirds (this year's and next year's) and possibly a fourth. I would accept this based on the fact that 31 other teams were lukewarm at best, and with the fact that most of the Chiefs memorable players on the field right now were in the third round.( Hunt, Kelce, Houston, etc.) I don't like the second just because the only outstanding second rounder from the Chiefs the last few years has been Chris Jones. So unless Veach has a genius move to get back in the first round, this is just a rookie mistake by Veach. That is also the thing to remember, just like Mahommes, Veach is still a rookie and will make a few mistakes. Only time will tell how this all shakes up, but this for sure is a growing pain for Brett Veach.
