So.... this article was supposed to be about where Smith would probably land. I guess that article was a throwaway.( Get it? Smith throws it away.) So instead we will talk about the deal that was made. Late Tuesday night Terez Paylor reported that the Chiefs traded Alex Smith to the Redskins for Kendall Fuller and a third round pick. Later it was reported that the Redskins gave Smith a contract extension. There is a lot to digest about this.
1. Brett Veach is killing this GM job this year. I am in the opinion that this deal is better than the Ragland deal so far.
2. The Redskins were absolutely in love with Smith. Just hours after the trade plans were announced they went to work and gave Smith an extension. They couldn't stay with Cousins too much longer.
3. The Chiefs helped restock their draft capital. Along with Fuller they got another 3rd round pick, which usually works out well with the Chiefs (i.e. Houston, Charles, Hunt, Nelson etc.)
4. Some gaps were being filled. They got a player who can take over that second corner role. PFF rates him as one of the best corners last year. This gets even more impressive when you realize he was playing with Josh Norman.
5. The biggest advantage from this trade comes in the area of the cap. You ditched a 17 million dollar contract this year with possibly a better QB under center. Losing that 17 million is HUGE. It can go to the rookie class, free agents, or even resigning players like Peters.
This trade is a miracle by Veach and if this is how he works, I think we will love him as time goes on.
