*Note that I have not liked the idea of this bend don't break defense since the 2016 season, this is just the first fitting opportunity I feel to write about it.*
Our Defense is broken.
That's right our strength for at least the last 6 years is now in pieces. Too many bends can break an item. A lot of this whole problem starts with Bob's Sutton's philosophy. The Bend but Don't Break defense has only made the quality of the Chiefs defense go down. Since the 2015 season the team's rank of yardage allowed has TANKED. The is a huge drop between 2015 and since then. In 2015 we were 7th in the league, in 2016 we were 24th, and so far in 2017, we are 30th in the league when it comes to yards allowed. Points allowed is also starting to follow this trend too. In 2015 we were 3rd, in 2016 we were 7th, and so far in 2017 we are 15th. These were released from pro football reference. One of the reasons for some of these drops is injuries of course, but by in large it seems to be by the philosophy.
One of the biggest problems with this is the fact that players get worn out. There is no better example of this than the Jets game. The offense put up enough points to win the game on the limited time there was. The problem was that most of the time of possession was favored to the Jets by a heavy margin. The Jets had almost 43 minutes of possession time to the chief's meager 17. One of the easiest ways to take time is to run the football. We saw (just as we have the last 2 years) the defense get gutted by the run.The Jets ran the ball 49 times, and got 157 yards. The bend don't break defense is tailored more towards stopping the pass than the run. This game just shows you the HUGE weakness in this. The players get wore out way too fast. Imagine running for almost 43 minutes straight. Halftime does help, but they are still worn out. That is part of why Revis didn't even play any second half snaps. He was on a pinch count and he ended up on the field too much during the first half.
Another way to help alleviate this would to be stopping the chance of getting penalized. Yes there is such a thing as smart penalties, I am not talking about those. I am talking about these neutral zone infractions and these blatant holding calls(i.e. Steven Nelson near the goal line). I get that the last two years the refs have not be kind to the chiefs, especially late in games(Jets game, Oakland game, Steelers playoff game), and you can say what you want to about these calls, but we are not helping ourselves with these things.( These do include actions by Kelce, and Peters, which is somewhat understandable, and I am not sure how it is not a bigger issue between the League and the Players Association as this has been a huge problem as of late) We should not be giving these refs any chance to call a penalty. These 12 men on the fields, and pass interferences, should not be able to be called on the chiefs. This just shows a real lack of discipline. Which goes hand in hand with the bend-don't-break defense. As long as the other team is not getting touchdowns it doesn't seem like the coaches care that much. That is why the Chiefs defense is broken.
